　　The diagrams illustrate the natural habitat and size of the salmon, a species of large fish, in three stages in its life cycle, lasting approximately nine and a half years. Generally, as the fish matures, it not only grows in size but also changes its habitat from a freshwater environment to a saltwater location .
　　In the first stage, eggs are spawned on the pebbles in the upper reaches of a river, where water flows slowly and reeds grow lushly. It takes about five to six months for eggs to hatch into fry, which measure three to eight centimeters long.
　　These baby salmon then travelto the fast flowing lower river, where they live for almost four years, before developing into smolts, measuring twelve to fifteen centimeters in length.
　　The final phase begins when these smolts migrate to the open sea, where they spend five years reaching maturity, between seventy and seventy six centimeters. These adult salmon then swim back to the upper river and the life cycle starts again.
